How can I tell whether my business is ready for data science?
You are likely ready when you have a specific recurring decision, a reasonable history of reliable data, one person who will use and own the results, and agreed definitions of key measures. If data is scattered or untrusted, fix that first, because models inherit its problems.
Questions to ask:
- Which decision would improve if we had a better prediction?
- What is that improvement worth in money or time?
- Do we have at least a year or two of relevant data?
- Who will act on the output?
- Can we measure success?
If the answers are unclear, start with reporting and data cleaning, or a simple baseline forecast. Readiness is about decisions and data discipline, not company size.
