How do I deal with duplicated rows after loading data?
Identify the cause first: repeated loads, joins that multiply rows, or duplicates in the source. Then fix it at the right layer by using unique keys, upserts or deduplication logic, and add a uniqueness test so it is caught automatically in future.
Diagnosis steps:
- Count rows by key and find keys with more than one row.
- Check load logs for repeated runs.
- Examine joins for many-to-many relationships.
Fixes:
- Make loads idempotent.
- Deduplicate using a rule, such as keeping the latest record per ID by timestamp.
- Correct the source if duplicates are entered by staff.
Never just delete duplicates in a report. Without fixing the cause, they return on the next refresh.
