How do I measure days to payment for medical claims?
Days to payment is the average number of days between claim submission and receipt of payment from the payer. Calculate it per claim using submission and remittance dates, then average by payer, month or claim type.
It matters because slow payers affect cash flow and show where follow-up effort should go.
Commonly misread:
- Using invoice date instead of submission date, which includes your own internal delay.
- Leaving unpaid claims out of the average, which understates the delay.
- Averaging across payers with very different terms.
Report the percentage of claims paid within 30, 60 and 90 days, not only the average. This needs remittances matched to claims, because bank deposits often combine many claims in one payment.
