How do I measure fuel consumption per kilometre for a vehicle fleet?
Fuel consumption is litres of fuel used divided by kilometres driven, often shown as litres per 100 km. Use fuel purchase or tank records and odometer or tracking distance for the same period, and compare each vehicle against its own history.
The inverse, kilometres per litre, is also common. Pick one and stay consistent.
It matters because fuel is a large and controllable fleet cost, and sudden changes can indicate mechanical faults, driver behaviour or fuel loss.
Commonly misread:
- Using fill-ups that do not match the distance period, as partial fills distort individual figures. Use totals over a longer window.
- Comparing loaded and empty vehicles or different vehicle types.
- Ignoring idling and stationary engine hours.
Match fuel card data to tracking data to check each fill against vehicle location.
