How do I measure whether a BI project is delivering value?
Tie it to specific outcomes before you start, such as hours saved on reporting, fewer disputes over numbers, faster month-end close, or decisions made with data, then check these after launch. Dashboard views alone do not show value unless they lead to action.
Ways to assess:
- Time spent producing recurring reports before and after.
- Number of data corrections or reconciliations needed.
- Speed to answer ad hoc questions.
- Decisions or actions traceable to insights, such as pricing, stock or staffing changes.
Avoid inventing precise return figures. Use your own baseline measurements and honest estimates. If a dashboard is never used, find out why, because the issue may be relevance or trust rather than technology.
