Should I hire a data analyst, use an agency, or use a freelancer?
Hire an analyst when you have steady, ongoing work and can manage them. Use a freelancer for a small, well-defined task. Use an agency or consultancy when you need several skills at once, such as engineering, modelling and dashboards, and want continuity if one person leaves.
Trade-offs in general terms:
- Employee: deep company knowledge, but one person rarely covers engineering, analysis and modelling, and leaving creates a gap
- Freelancer: flexible and often cost-effective, but availability and documentation vary
- Agency: broader skills and continuity, usually at a higher day rate
Whichever you choose, insist that you own the code, data and documentation so you are never locked in.
