What is a data dictionary and how do I create one?
A data dictionary is a reference listing every field in your data with its meaning, type, source, allowed values and any business rules. Create one by listing your key tables, describing each column in plain language, and getting the people who use the data to confirm the definitions.
Start small with the tables behind your main dashboards.
For each column record:
- Name and data type.
- Plain-English description.
- Source system and field.
- Allowed values or units, such as currency or time zone.
- Notes on edge cases.
Tools such as dbt can generate documentation from descriptions you write alongside the models. Review it whenever definitions change, since the most common source of confusion is two teams using the same word differently.
