What is machine learning explained in plain language for business owners?
Machine learning is software that learns patterns from past examples instead of being given explicit rules. You show it historical data, such as past customers and whether they left, and it finds relationships it can then use to predict outcomes for new cases. Its predictions are only as good as the data it learned from.
Think of it as automated pattern-fitting. A traditional program says 'if X then Y'. A machine-learning model works out the relationship between inputs and outcomes from many examples.
Important caveats:
- It finds correlation, not necessarily cause.
- It struggles when the future differs from the past.
- It can learn quirks of noisy data that do not repeat.
That is why testing on data the model has not seen is essential.
