What is the best way to import CSV files into a database reliably?
Load each CSV into a raw staging table exactly as received, then validate and transform it into clean tables. Check column names, data types, encoding, delimiters and row counts on every load, and reject or flag files that do not match the expected structure.
Common CSV traps:
- Different character encodings that corrupt accented names.
- Commas inside fields without proper quoting.
- Leading zeros lost when codes are read as numbers.
- Dates in day-month versus month-day order.
- Headers that change between exports.
Keep a record of which file was loaded and when, so you can trace and avoid loading the same file twice. Automating delivery to a shared folder or storage bucket makes the process dependable.
