Who should be responsible for data in a small company?
Assign a senior owner accountable for data overall, plus named owners for key datasets and metrics, usually the managers who understand them, such as finance for revenue. Technical staff or a supplier maintain systems, but business owners decide definitions and priorities.
Roles to consider:
- Executive sponsor who backs the effort
- Metric owners in each department
- A technical custodian, internal or external
- Someone who handles access and privacy requests
One person may hold several roles in a small firm. What matters is that responsibilities are named, not left to everyone and therefore no one. Write the roles down and share them, so questions about a number always have an obvious person to ask.
