Can healthcare practices use forecasting while protecting patient privacy?

Yes. Many useful forecasts, such as appointment demand, no-shows, stock use and staffing needs, can be built on aggregated or de-identified data. Keep patient-identifiable information out of analytics wherever possible, restrict access, process data in a controlled environment and follow the health data rules that apply to you.

Health data is generally treated as especially sensitive under privacy laws such as POPIA and GDPR, so data minimisation is key. Ask whether the forecast needs individual patient records at all, or whether daily counts by service are enough.

Never put patient data into public AI tools. Document who has access and why, and involve your privacy or compliance officer early. Models that influence individual patient care carry extra requirements and need clinical oversight.
