How can hospitality businesses forecast bookings and occupancy?
Combine booking pace, which is bookings on hand compared with the same point in previous years, with seasonality, events, holidays, pricing and cancellations patterns. Forecast final occupancy from how reservations typically accumulate before arrival, and update daily. This supports pricing, staffing and purchasing decisions.
Booking pace is a powerful short-term signal: if you are well ahead of last year at 30 days out, demand is likely stronger.
Additional considerations:
- Cancellation and no-show rates by channel.
- Length-of-stay patterns.
- Local events and school calendars.
- Group bookings treated separately from individual ones.
Restaurants can forecast covers by day and service and link them to ingredient ordering and staffing. Keep forecasts at the granularity of the decision, such as per night or per service.
