How do I run a price test without damaging customer trust?
Test small, defined changes on limited groups, products or periods, keep the comparison fair, and avoid showing different customers visibly different prices for identical items in the same place. Define success metrics such as profit per visitor before starting, and run long enough to cover normal weekly cycles.
Options include testing across stores or regions, testing new prices on new products, or alternating prices across time periods. Be mindful of fairness, local consumer laws and the reputational risk when customers notice price differences.
Guidelines:
- Change one thing at a time.
- Compare against similar untested groups.
- Watch for stock and promotion effects.
- Measure margin, not just units.
- Agree a stop rule if results turn negative.
Avoid price discrimination based on sensitive personal characteristics.
