How should a small business back up its important data?

Keep multiple copies of important data, at least one stored separately from the main system, and test that you can actually restore from them. A common rule of thumb is three copies, on two types of storage, with one offsite. Backups must also be protected from unauthorised access.

Decide how much data you could afford to lose and how long you could be without it, then set backup frequency and recovery time to match.

Remember that backups contain personal data too, so they need encryption, access control and a retention period. Cloud services often have built-in backup or recovery features, but check what is covered, since some only protect against platform failure and not accidental deletion.
