Why does encryption matter and what should be encrypted?

Encryption scrambles data so it cannot be read without the key. It matters because it protects information if a device is lost or a storage system is accessed improperly. Encrypt data in transit, when it moves over networks, and at rest, when it is stored.

Most reputable cloud services encrypt stored data by default and use secure connections, but confirm this rather than assume it. Also consider laptops, phones, USB drives and backups.

Encryption protects mainly against particular risks. It does not help if an authorised account is compromised, so pair it with access controls and strong authentication. Manage keys carefully, since losing them can mean losing the data.
