What is data literacy and how can a team improve it?
Data literacy is the ability to read, question and use data sensibly. Teams improve it through short practical training on their own dashboards, clear metric definitions, encouraging questions about where numbers come from, and using data routinely in meetings rather than occasionally.
It does not mean everyone must code. Core skills are understanding averages versus totals, spotting misleading charts, knowing the difference between correlation and causation, and recognising data limitations.
Tactics that help:
- Short walkthroughs when a dashboard launches
- A glossary of terms
- Leaders who ask for evidence
- A named person to answer questions Even brief, regular sessions tied to real company numbers tend to work better than generic classroom training.
