What is row-level security in BI and when do I need it?
Row-level security restricts which rows of data each user can see, so a branch manager sees only their branch, or a client only their records. You need it whenever the same dashboard serves people who should not see all the data.
It is typically enforced through user attributes mapped to filters, applied in the BI tool or, more robustly, in the database itself.
Points to consider:
- Enforce security as close to the data as possible; hiding a filter in the front end is not security.
- Test with real user accounts, not just admin accounts.
- Document the rule so it survives staff turnover.
- Features and editions differ between tools, so check what your plan supports.
This is also relevant for privacy compliance, since personal data should be available only to those who need it.
