Why do so many business dashboards end up unused?
Dashboards go unused when they are built without a clear user and decision in mind, show numbers people do not trust, are slow or cluttered, lack ownership, or are never updated as the business changes. Technical quality alone does not create adoption.
Common causes:
- Built from available data rather than real questions
- Metrics defined differently from how teams think about them
- No training or habit, such as using them in weekly meetings
- Errors that were never fixed, eroding trust
- No owner to maintain them
Involve the actual users from the start, review the dashboard in a recurring meeting, and fix reported errors quickly.
