What is a dashboard in business terms and what should it show?
A dashboard is a single screen that displays the key numbers a team needs to monitor performance, usually as charts, tables and headline figures that update from underlying data. A good one shows a handful of agreed metrics for a specific audience and makes it obvious what needs attention.
Effective dashboards are built around decisions, not around available data. Before building, ask who will use it, how often, and what action a change in each number should trigger.
Common features of a useful dashboard:
- A small number of metrics with clear definitions
- Comparison to a target, prior period or benchmark
- Filters for the dimensions people really use, such as date or region
- Drill-down to the detail behind a number
