How many KPIs or charts should one dashboard have?
Fewer than most people expect. A focused dashboard typically shows around five to ten key figures or visuals that fit on one screen, aimed at one audience and purpose. If users must scroll through dozens of charts, split it into separate views or add drill-down pages.
There is no fixed rule, but clutter dilutes attention. Helpful principles:
- Put the most important figures at the top
- Show comparison to target or prior period
- Use simple chart types people already understand
- Make filters obvious
- Move detail to secondary pages
Test it by asking a user to find an answer. If it takes more than a few seconds, simplify.
