Can I connect QuickBooks to Power BI or Metabase?
Yes, usually by extracting QuickBooks data through its API into a database or warehouse and then connecting your BI tool to that. Some BI tools offer direct connectors, but a staging database gives you better performance, history and control over how accounting data is modelled.
Considerations:
- QuickBooks Online has an API with authentication and rate limits; desktop versions work differently and may need export-based approaches.
- Standard reports in QuickBooks may not match raw transaction data unless you replicate its logic.
- Classes, locations and custom fields should be pulled explicitly if you report on them.
Plan for reconciling your loaded totals to QuickBooks' own profit and loss and balance sheet, so you can trust the data before building dashboards.
