Metabase vs Power BI: which is better for a small company?
It depends on your existing tools and user count. Metabase is open-source, simple and easy for non-technical people to explore, and its open-source edition has no per-user licence fee. Power BI is more powerful for complex modelling and integrates tightly with Microsoft 365, but is licensed per user in most setups.
Choose Metabase when you want quick, clean dashboards, easy self-service questions and predictable costs across many viewers.
Choose Power BI when your team already lives in Microsoft tools, needs advanced DAX calculations, or wants deep Excel integration.
Things to compare:
- Licence model and how many viewers you have.
- Who will build and maintain reports.
- Hosting preference, since Metabase can be self-hosted.
- Features like row-level security and embedding, which differ by edition.
The data model underneath matters more than the tool.
