How do I choose a BI tool for my business?
Start with who will use it, which data sources you have, how many viewers there are, your budget model, and who will maintain it. Shortlist two or three tools, test them on your real data, and weigh licence structure, ease of use, embedding and security needs.
Selection checklist:
- Users: how many builders and how many viewers?
- Skills: SQL, Excel or neither?
- Connectors: does it work with your database or warehouse?
- Licensing: per-user, capacity or open-source?
- Governance: permissions, row-level security, version control.
- Hosting: cloud or self-hosted.
- Exit: can you move your data model if you switch?
A clean data layer makes tool choice less critical, because dashboards can be rebuilt without redoing the underlying logic.
