Should a small company use BigQuery, Snowflake or Postgres as its data warehouse?
For most small and mid-sized companies, any of the three works, and the choice depends on data volume, existing cloud, skills and billing model. BigQuery and Snowflake are managed cloud warehouses that scale easily. Postgres is a free, mature database that is often enough for modest data volumes and simple needs.
Rough guide:
- BigQuery: serverless, charges mainly by storage and data scanned or compute reserved, and fits well if you already use Google tools.
- Snowflake: separates storage and compute, bills by usage, and runs on several clouds.
- Postgres: familiar, cheap, easy to self-host or use managed, but you handle more tuning as data grows.
Pricing and limits change, so check current terms. If your data is under a few gigabytes and queries are simple, Postgres is often fine. If you expect growth or many sources, a cloud warehouse reduces operational work.
