Can I send personal data to another country for analytics work?
Often yes, but many privacy laws, including GDPR, UK GDPR and POPIA, place conditions on cross-border transfers, such as adequate protection in the destination or suitable contractual safeguards. Remote access from abroad can count as a transfer. This is general information, not legal advice.
Before sending or exposing personal data across borders, consider:
- Which laws apply to the data subjects
- Whether the destination is recognised as adequate or whether contractual safeguards are needed
- Whether you can avoid the transfer, for example by de-identifying data first
Rules change over time, so confirm current requirements with a qualified adviser. Rules differ by country and sector, so check how this applies to you with a qualified adviser.
