Is it safe to use AI tools on business data?
It can be, if you control what data they receive. Avoid pasting personal or client-identifiable data into public AI tools, check each provider's data-use terms, prefer enterprise agreements where needed, and keep sensitive processing inside your own cloud environment with proper access controls.
Key risks are leakage of confidential information, using data for model training without consent, and breaching privacy law.
Sensible rules:
- Anonymise or aggregate before sharing
- Use approved tools only
- Record what data goes where
- Review AI-generated code and answers before relying on them
AI can speed up analytics work considerably, but human review remains essential for accuracy.
