What are the basics of data governance for a small company?
Data governance means clear rules for who owns data, who can access it, how it is defined and how quality and privacy are protected. For a small company, start light: name an owner for each key dataset, document metric definitions, control access and record where personal data lives.
Governance sounds heavy but can be proportionate. A practical starting set:
- A named owner for each key dataset or metric
- A shared glossary of definitions
- Role-based access, with least privilege
- A list of where personal data is stored and why
- A simple process for reporting and fixing data errors
Write it down briefly and review it yearly. Policies nobody reads do not count as governance.
