What is data maturity and why should a business assess it?
Data maturity describes how well an organisation collects, manages and uses data to make decisions. Assessing it shows where you are, what to fix first and what to avoid, so you invest in the right next step instead of buying advanced tools your foundations cannot support.
A maturity assessment looks at several areas:
- Data availability and quality
- Tools and infrastructure
- Skills and ownership
- Governance and security
- How decisions are actually made
It need not be elaborate. A simple honest review of where numbers come from, who trusts them and what is manual is often enough to set priorities and build a sensible roadmap.
