What is Power Query and how does it help with data preparation?
Power Query is a data preparation tool built into Excel and Power BI. It lets you connect to sources, clean and reshape data through recorded steps, and refresh the whole process with one click, making repetitive preparation consistent and repeatable.
Common uses:
- Combine many monthly files from a folder.
- Unpivot cross-tab reports into proper tables.
- Split, merge and standardise columns.
- Merge tables from different sources.
Its steps are written in a language called M, but most can be created through the interface. It is great for individual analysts and moderate data sizes. For shared, large-scale or heavily tested transformations, SQL in a warehouse is usually easier to govern.
