Who owns the data when a company hires an outside analytics provider?
The client should own its data, and the contract should say so. A provider handling personal data as a processor or operator acts on the client's instructions and should not claim ownership or use the data for its own purposes. This is general information, not legal advice.
Make sure the agreement covers data ownership, permitted use, return or deletion at the end, and who owns derived items such as models and reports. Do not assume; some providers claim rights over outputs or aggregated data.
Storing data in a cloud account you own makes ownership practical as well as legal, since you hold the keys and can revoke access. Rules differ by country and sector, so check how this applies to you with a qualified adviser.
