Is it better to keep company data in my own cloud account or the provider's?

Keeping data in a cloud account you own generally gives you more control, because you hold the keys, choose the settings, see the logs and can revoke the provider's access at any time. Provider-hosted data depends on their security and their willingness to hand it back.

A client-owned account also makes exit simpler, since the data never needed to be returned. It makes responsibilities clearer too: you set the region, access policy and retention, and the provider works inside your environment.

The trade-off is that you carry the account's billing and need basic administration. Either model needs a written agreement and sensible access controls. Rules differ by country and sector, so check how this applies to you with a qualified adviser.
