Can I put customer personal data into ChatGPT or other AI tools?
It is risky and often inadvisable. Putting personal data into a public AI tool can mean sharing it with a third party without a lawful basis, an agreement or control over how it is retained. Check the provider's terms, your privacy notice and the law first. This is general information, not legal advice.
Safer habits include:
- Never paste identifiable customer or staff data into consumer AI tools
- Remove or mask identifiers first
- Use business-grade offerings with written data terms where AI use is justified
- Set a short written staff policy on AI use
Analytics providers should also be able to say clearly what AI tools they use and what data those tools see.
