What are the risks of outsourcing data analytics?
Risks include dependence on the supplier, unclear ownership of code and data, weaker understanding of your business, privacy exposure and poor handover. You can manage them by owning the cloud account, requiring documentation, fixing scope in writing and keeping an internal contact who understands the work.
Mitigations:
- Hold data and code in your own accounts
- Define deliverables and acceptance criteria
- Require documented handover
- Limit supplier access to what is needed
- Include privacy and confidentiality clauses
Outsourcing works well when you remain the owner and decision-maker. A good supplier will welcome these safeguards, because they make the relationship clearer and easier to end or extend.
