Is fixed-price or time-and-materials better for a data project?
Fixed price suits well-defined work, giving budget certainty and an incentive for the supplier to deliver efficiently. Time and materials suits uncertain or exploratory work. A common compromise is a fixed-fee discovery or audit first, then a fixed-price build based on what it finds.
Risks to watch:
- Fixed price with a vague scope leads to disputes over changes
- Time and materials with no cap can run away
Whichever you choose, insist on a written scope, deliverables, timeline and a change process. Zansa follows the staged approach: a fixed-fee Health Check, then a Foundation Build with fixed price and timeline agreed in writing, so costs are known before the main work starts.
