What is vendor lock-in in analytics and how can I avoid it?
Vendor lock-in is when switching supplier or tool becomes very costly because your data, logic or dashboards are tied to their proprietary system. Avoid it by owning your cloud account, using open or widely supported tools, keeping code in your repositories and requiring documentation.
Practical steps:
- Hold the data in an account under your name
- Prefer standard languages such as SQL
- Keep transformation logic in version-controlled code
- Avoid black-box tools without export options
- Ask for an exit plan in the contract
Some convenience tools trade flexibility for speed. That can be fine, provided you know the cost of leaving before you commit.
