What is pseudonymisation and how does it differ from anonymisation?

Pseudonymisation replaces identifying details, such as names, with codes, while a separate key can still link the data back to a person. Anonymisation removes identifiability so that the data can no longer reasonably be linked to anyone. Pseudonymised data is generally still personal data under GDPR. This is general information, not legal advice.

Pseudonymisation reduces risk and is a recognised safeguard, but does not take data outside privacy law. True anonymisation is hard, because combinations of ordinary fields, such as postcode, age and date, can sometimes identify a person.

Keep any re-identification key separate and restricted, and test whether anonymised data could realistically be linked back. Rules differ by country and sector, so check how this applies to you with a qualified adviser.
